Bound: a Life Learning Experience
Outward
Bound Indonesia has delivered Youth programs to more than 3000
junior high school through to university students from across
the country and abroad. Among them are from North Jakarta International
School, Sekolah Pelita Harapan, British International School,
Jakarta International School, Santa Ursula, Karang Turi, Sekolah
Permata Bangsa, Atma Jaya University, Raffles Institute in Singapore
and many more. The strength of the program lies in the richness
of the program curriculum and activities and the diversity and
uniqueness of the children working together as a team.
North
Jakarta International School
On 21st to 25th of April 2008, ten Grade 8 and 9 students of North
Jakarta International School (NJIS) went on a weeklong Outward
Bound program. The goals of the program were to build student
leadership, cooperation and team working skills, as well as develop
the students’ ability to take initiative in challenging
and testing circumstances.

Mr. Collett,
a Social Studies teacher at NJIS who also came with the students
to observe the program in Jatiluhur believes that the trip was
a success and matched exactly all the goals NJIS as a school has
for their 8th/9th grade class trips.“As
students move into their formative high school years, the skills
taught on Outward Bound become a prerequisite for developing active,
engaged learners. The students’ experiences on the trip
were invaluable in this respect,” said
Mr. Collett. “It was a pleasure to see these city kids from
Jakarta experience the great outdoors,” Mr.
Hickey, a Math teacher added.

Arjun Ajwani
one of the students, said that he learned a great deal about himself
through this program, “I have learned that it is very important
to be able to adapt and take different challenges with courage
and try your best to succeed in various tasks.” Asked what
his goals after the program, he said in confidence,”To not
get hung up on my comfort zone and push myself to try harder.”
Arjun shared that his most memorable activity in the program was
mountain trekking and canoeing.
Outward
Bound as part of School Curriculum
Outward Bound Indonesia works closely with the schools in building
a program that is intermittent with its curriculum, vision and
goals. For the past 5 years, Outward Bound has become an integral
part of the 7th graders experiential education framework for Sekolah
Pelita Harapan, one of Indonesia’s leading education institutions.
The students dive into an unconventional learning environment
where participation, leadership skills, creativity, teamwork,
endurance, tenacity and compassion are all being exercised.
